Artist Statement:
Using elements available from nature brings a sense of peace and a feeling of connection with basket artisans across cultures, continents and even centuries. Basketry speaks to all my senses: visual, auditory, taste, smell as well as touch. I am fascinated by the opposition I feel when creating a basket, knotted sculpture, or even basketry embellishments on gourds: the creative side which loves flowing lines, textures, experimentation and color, versus the controlled, organized side, which loves the symmetry, proportion and careful construction
