Seven Dogs

By Karen Engel
H: 8" | W: 9" | D: 9"

My Seven Dogs hat is my interpretation of traditional Skokomish designs used for a Nez Perce style hat. I have use wool yarn twined over 2mm hemp cord. The rectangular boxes indicate wealth as do the dogs. The hair from the dogs was collected and used for loom weaving.

Artist Statement:
The tradition of basket weaving runs deep in my family. I feel honored to follow in the steps of Great Great Great Aunt Satsop Ann, a Skokomish weaver photographed with her baskets around her. I am an elder of the Shoalwater Bay Tribe and an active member of the Northwest Basket Weavers, Vi Phillips Guild and the Northwest Native American Basketweavers Assoc. Through the Guild she has taken many classes and workshops, working with various materials and weaving methods. As I continue to improve my weaving skills my wish is to help preserve traditional designs and to honor the women who came before me.
