The Shakers were known for the quintessential cathead basket. The smaller baskets, known as kittenheads have the classic “ears” when turned upside down. This set of 3 reproduction kittenhead baskets are each woven over wooden forms with precisely prepared black ash splint. The rims and handles are made of maple. This trio was designed to be taught in one of my workshops.

Artist Statement:
Making baskets of black ash splint satisfies some of my basic inner needs. Helping my husband Steve harvest the black ash tree keeps me in touch with nature, while designing and weaving the basket satisfies my artistic need to express myself.
I am a craftsman. I strive to make each basket technically perfect. The splint is precisely prepared, and each basket is woven over a wooden mold to obtain the symmetry that I desire. My passion is weaving miniatures and these reproductions of Shaker baskets give me joy.
